Outsourcing security could be the best move you make.

You feel like you’ve finally gotten this network security issue under control.  Comprehensive and expensive security solutions have been put in place. But to be effective, every one of those solutions needs to be proactively monitored and managed, with their settings reviewed, tweaked and adjusted on an ongoing basis. And the IT professionals charged with all that monitoring and managing need to stay in front of a threat landscape that changes daily.

It’s a lot to ask of any internal IT department.  Which is why nearly half of businesses plan to outsource their security to a Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP), according to a new report from software provider Solarwinds.

An MSSP is different than a traditional managed service provider (MSP).  While an MSP offers a range of IT services that have an operational focus and ensure a company’s data is available and IT systems are up and running; an MSSP goes all in on security and provides outsourced monitoring and management of security devices and systems.

We were an MSP first. In fact, SLPowers is one of the oldest and largest MSPs in the nation, with dozens of awards and honors attesting to our leadership in that field. Over time we developed a passion—an obsession, really—with the security of our clients’ information, and for protecting the identities of their employees. Out of that obsession grew the processes and controls—and the independent certifications—that stamp us as a formidable MSSP.

An MSSP implements security internally and externally, and they go beyond the basic security layer provided by backups, patching, and antivirus updates.  Advanced security layers include more sophisticated processes and robust solutions such as data encryption, BYOD (bring your own device) management, and Unified Threat Management (UTM).  And MSSPs can also help develop threat policies and procedures to ensure an organization’s risk is mitigated at every level.

The proactive measures provided by MSSP go way beyond the passive basic security characteristic of most MSP services, making it an important consideration when evaluating the security risks and addressing vulnerabilities of any business IT infrastructure.  So it’s no wonder we’re seeing more and more organizations opt for this route when it comes to their security concerns and needs.

The SolarWinds report finds:

  • 49% of respondents are planning to outsource their security for the first time.
  • 60% of respondents are currently managing all or part of their security internally but of those, 82% are likely to outsource in the next 12 months.
  • Out of those likely to outsource, 42% cited cost and 40% performance as the main drivers for this decision.
  • The majority of businesses in the report preferred a security specialist to an MSP, with 70% agreeing that it would give them “more trust in their security capabilities".
